They asked how they could recreate what Mosaic had become. And by virtue of my six years on the pastoral staff of this particular congregation, I was now an “expert” on how churches can become multiethnic. I stepped into Mosaic after being a member of four other churches and a pastor at three of them, all of them middle- to upper-middleclass, suburban, and overwhelmingly white.
Data were collected at all celebration services in January and February 2000, with a simple ﬁll-in-the-blank card requesting basic information such as name, address, and age. The bottom of the card listed “Ethnicity” and “Country of Origin,” each with a blank line next to it; no other instructions were given. Just under six hundred respondents, approximately 75 percent of the average weekly adult attendance at the time, ﬁlled in something for “Ethnicity,” and the aggregated results are presented in table 1.
